Reconstruction of the Great Stupa of Auspicious Juelang School
While examining the Tibetan Buddhism History, Juelang School was once playing
a role of the most influential school in Tibet. The most supreme teaching
and lineage of the Wheel of Time-space Vajara can be traced back directly
to his personal teaching of Lord Buddha. It was hold in the Stupa of Rice
Storage at Mt. Auspicious in South India. As shown on the Tibetan’s important
historical document “Green Record”, at the most prosperous time of Juelang
School practitioners were in hundreds and thousands almost fulfilled all the
valleys in front and rear Tibet. Or, it is described that there were full
of dance of six yoga branches in all gardens and parks of Lashal.
Especially about 700 hundreds years ago, the great achiever Gunchen Dubupa
was born on year 1292 who had fully met the accurate forecast thousands years
ago in many ancient Sutras such as, The great Drum Sutra, Maha Nivarna Sutra
and the Supreme Sources of Buddha Darani Sutra. He was the abbot of the master
Temple Juelang for 35 years; during that time he had promote all Juelang teachings
and its actually practice up to their peak. He finished the Commentary of
“On the mountain methodology with comprehensive ocean views” and many other
works. He deeply expounded the profound conception of “Other-Emptiness” and
formed the significant banners of the Juelang School.
The commentary had also impact on founder of Gelug school, the Tsong-kapa’s
main theory. One year when Dubupa went to front Tibet in Lashal for demonstrated
the sutra and teaching of “The Six branches yoga” and “Fundamental Sutra of
Time Wheel Tantric Teaching”, many leaders and thousands of civil people were
gathered to listen and learning. He did achieve a very high level in his practice
including the ability to see the Holiness Avolokitsvera, Mansujsri.and Daras
in his meditation equilibrium. He also had the power to command many guardian
gods and ghosts. Also the capability that he manifested himself for various
purposes in different places at the same time.
Either the Emperor of Yuan Dynasty had heard his fame, and sent for Royal
delegates with precious presents and commands to invite him to come forth
to the Capital. He accepted the invitation and went along with the delegates.
When they reached Doshi the border of Tibet and Han territory, he had a vision
in his meditation practice and found out that mass Tibetans were chasing them
with weapons and angry because of a spreading rumors about his kidnapping
by Han people. In order to avoid the tragedy of conflicts among these two
groups, he advised Royal delegates to go alone without him. They thought Dubupa
was trying to get rid of them and won’t go to the Capital to meet the Emperor.
Not that they won’t listen to his advise, but try to kill him. They said angrily
“If we were not able to fetch you to the Capital, than you may go with us
by your head.” Because they are allowed to return without him, at least the
head of Dubupa’s. However, when the sword cut through his neck; it had no
effect at all just like cutting in the rainbow. The head was still on top
of Dubupa’s shoulder. So astonished! Royal delegates now believed that they
had encountered a real living Bodhisattvera and asked for his pardon. So,
he requested delegates to go away immediately, and returned by himself. Therefore,
he resolved the conflicts in such an easy way. Then he employed his magic
power to manifest himself in front of the Yuan Emperor to tell the events
and transmitted teachings and practice that the Emperor wanted. After all
these things had been accomplished, than he vanished in the emptiness.
In the valley of Mt. Juelang, Guchen Dubupa had constructed the Great Auspicious
Stoup, which had placed respectfully with one hundred thousands Buddha status.
So that it was called One hundred thousands Buddha Status Stupa as well. When
he hold the beginning ceremony of the construction, there were colorful rainbows
appeared in the sky. In the screen of rainbows, there was shown the image
of Guru Rinpoche too.
Even the drought winter wild land flew with fresh spring waters. Thereafter,
in the ceremony of Stupa completion, many strange rainbows appeared in the
sky and many people could see images of Buddhas, Bodhisattavara, Dieties,
Dakinis and guardians to come forward for congratulations.
Unfortunately, three and half centuries ago at China Emperor Shunzhi of
Chin Dynasty, the fifth Dalai Lama had conquered the whole Tibet. He had unified
various religious schools and most of them changed to follow up the Gelug
School. Either Juelang School was diminishing. In some records it was said
that “ the Juelang School was extinct completely in Tibet.“ Or, “After 17rth
century, the Juelang school was no more existing.” Even the most important
symbol of Juelang School-The Auspicious Stupa was ruined quietly in erosion
and without maintenance during several hundred years of time.
As time passing by, as well as the fading influence of the so called “Culture
Revolution “ erupted on the middle of last century, it had wide-spreaded all
over the whole Mainland; the prevail of the tortured China is getting recovery.
Many Mani piles are again appearing here and there in the high plains of the
Chinghai and Tibet. This time, a heavenly voice that disappeared for almost
hundred years is raising loud and clear in this world. That is the re-appearance
of the Juelang School of the Tantric Buddhism in this vast land. His most
valuable Abbot of Zangwa Temple in Langtang Aba, Sichuan, the Vajara Master
of the school-Yunden Sanbu (1928-2002) initiated this thunder like voices.
He was a great achiever of the teaching and practice of Juelang School. He
was engaged in the most long period perseverance life style and lived in a
most simple life, such a moderate man with the best vision, knowledgeable
in the most profound Buddhist Classics and well learnt in most difficult Tantric
practice. Not only he gained a very respectable position inside of Juelang
School, but also earned many people’s respect outside, either people of Tibet
or others. Once the Tenth Panchan Lama (1938-1989) invited the Abbot Master
Yunden Sanbu home. In this very special occasion, Panchan Lama announced very
cordially and seriously: “ For very long time, many people thought that the
most precious and complete Time Wheel Vajra Tantric Teaching had been already
vanished in Tibet and it is just merely fantasy and talking. Its lineage of
most triumph and enormous scale Initiation ceremony had gone absolutely. Or
at least, it was incomplete. Therefore, I felt so lost from time to time.
It is utterly out of my thought that in your area, such a great person like
you can preserve this most wonderful Time Wheel Vajra Tantric Teaching in
its complete context without a single mistake. I am so happy and excited,
so rejoice for this great trantric teaching not having been lost. I am so
rejoice for this encounter with you.” Then he asked for the initiation and
empowerment of the Time Wheel Tantric Teaching from Master Yunden Sanbu. Also,
he invited the master must write down the context and ideology of the Juelang
School. Sometime after, he had introduced the master to Apei Awanchinmei and
President of Chinese Buddhist General Association Mr. Zhao puchu. Eventually,
the Juelang School has regained its reputation and became well known. People
aware of that Juelang School has not been extinguished. It is preserved in
a lineage of pure and clean tradition continuously in the area of Langtang,
Sichuan area till now.
Master Yunden Sanbu had not failed the sincere anticipation and trust of
H.E. Panchan Lama; he entered into mountain valley in one whole winter to
write down the highly admired book “The General Conception of Juelang Teaching”.
There were some good omens for this event as the flowers blossomed in that
particular cold winter. He also worked tireless for the recruitment of carving
craftsmen to carve all Gunchen Dubenpa’s work and other important works from
all Juelang masters in the wooden plates for publication use. Autumn of 1999,
people of all Juelang schools had gathered joyfully for celebration of Initiation
Ceremony of the publication of these works for the first time since several
hundreds years ago.
Unfortunately, Master Yunden Sanbu had suffered from various kinds of disease
since than, and passed away aged 74, on April.15 2002 at Beijing. Two or three
years before his death, he had already written the will to authorize Awan
Jianyang Leizu Tulku his most favorable student as his successor of the Juelang
lineage. Also, there are some valuable Buddha status which given by of Yuan
and Ming Dynasty Emperors are leave to the Tuklu’s disposal. Over the sky
of Beijing city, there were many strange signs manifested when the great master
entered his nirvana.
As well as, various wondrous signs on the sky of Zhangwa Monastery while
his disciples transferred his body back to Langtang.
Jianyang Leizu Tulku was bon 1974, in Guoluo county of South East Qinghai,
which is well known by its wondrous mountain and waters. He was a clever boy
at his early age and attended school at age of 4. Teachers are all admire
him as a genius, since he learnt very quickly and well. Than at age of 5,
he was recognized by Zhangwa monastery as the reincarnation of the past Zangmou
Tulku. He studied the chanting of sutra, meditation, retreating from master
Qiouerrang and H.E.Yunden Sanbu. Thus, he commenced his life day after day
as a monastery monk. He also took 3 years retreat twice; before he reached
age of ten. After 90’s, there are more and more mandarin speaking people come
to study, therefore, H.E. Yunden Sanbu asked him to learn Mandarin for the
convenience of communication with Hans. With limited contact with Hans, he
learnt very fast and eventually, speaks a very fluent mandarin now.
After the pass away of H.E. Yunden Sanbu, there are still three tasks must
be done by his disciples. The first: continuous job of carving various works
of Juelang teaching. Second: to set up a Buddhist school. And the third: to
re-construct Stupa of Gunchen-Dubenpa. No matter how difficult these tasks
could be, Jianyang Leizu Tulku always reminds himself that he must try all
efforts to finish them. The progressives are:
1). Carving works is a long-term job, it has been under going smoothly.
2). School project is under evaluation.
3). The site, planning, and design of re-construction of the stupa has been
approval by domestic government. It just needs more preparation for the commencement
of the construction.
This Stupa would be nominated as “The Auspicious Time Wheel Stupa of Liberation
by Seeing “. It tries to honour the teaching of Time wheel Vajra by Load Buddha
in Rice storage tower and for the liberation of faithful upon seeing the tower.
The Stupa is elegantly designed in 50 meters high, made of white marbles.
It will be an imitation of the original Stupa built by Gundhen Dubenpa in
traditional Tibetan style.
The whole body relics stupa of H.E. Yunden Sanbu will be installed in this
great Stupa, as well.
According to the context of the “Sutral of Stupa construction”, it says
that: “ No matter how high than the Shumi Mountain of the three realms or
as small as a fortunate fruit, or how big as the universe or as small as needle
leave of the stupa could be, if it has the Sutras, or any remains of Buddha’s
installed, than the merits of the person who has contribution to build the
stupa is so great, it surpass the merits in heaven.”
Also stated in the text of “Precepts of Sanga” that “ the merits of construction
a Buddha Stupa in careless manners is more than that donations with real gold
in thousand or hundreds barrels seriously”
These two verses are tring to explain the importance and merits of helping
to build a Buddhist Stupa.
The location of Zhangwa Monastery is in an area of extremely poverty. The
China state council has already defined it as one of the poorest area of 23
counties. It has not yet got rid of the struggle with poverty. Therefore,
to build a Stupa in representative of the current Juelang School at this place
is certainly of great help to the nearby areas and people.
Wish you offer your hands to help the reconstruction of the Stupa!!!
